Textile Art

Printed, Painted, Layered & Stitched.

Process

My process includes painting in layers of glazed water soluble mediums on printed linen cotton canvas. The painted composition is layered like a quilt with non-woven batting. Using a sewing machine I create a contour drawing over the composition adding patterns of colored thread.

All the raw edges are finished by hand. The soft canvas floats on a support slat just beyond the wall.

Statement

I believe the enemy of the creative process is limitation. Neither tools nor rules hinder  any artist from making what they envision.  Art is not restricted by any single genre, medium, school or process. It  is an authentic expression of the creative spirit.
Taking cues from pop art, surrealism, and contemporary portraiture, I use  traditional painting techniques with digital tools to convey complex ideas and compositions with layered imagery. My subject matter is always connected to my life using source materials including vintage family pictures, images from the Library of Congress, cell phone snapshots, original drawings, and paintings .
